In The Studio

This week, I want to share some of the projects I am currently working on. I am always thinking about, designing and implementing a few projects at any one time. Since I am a creative person, that is how I like to work – I love the challenge, the variety, and the endless flow of inspiration that comes with working on more than one project at the same time.  However, there is a limit. In order to give my clients’ new homes and offices the time, care, and commitment they deserve, I accept only four, occasionally five, projects within the same timeframe. Some Sydney interior designers thrive on the pressure of working on many projects; I prefer to give my spaces that extra bit of time and attention.

Here is a breakdown of some of the spaces I am immersed in at the moment:

  1. Designing a kitchen, a one-bedroom en-suite and a powder room. These rooms are contained within an Italian-inspired home, which is marked by its grandeur. I always feel a sense of awe and wonder when I am surrounded by such elegance. I love the process.
  2. Recreating a three-bedroom apartment in Double Bay, a leafy and affluent suburb in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. This project has a few different elements, including a fresh layout and new furniture. It also involves seamlessly incorporating the client’s eclectic into the reinvigorated space.
  3. Renovating and refurnishing an indoor/outdoor patio at a house in Bellevue Hill, which is also located in the Eastern Suburbs. I apply my design philosophy to all spaces – no matter how big or small – and this patio is no exception. I am in the process of layering and using decorative objects to create a timeless, functional space. I have also proposed new furniture for the dining area as well as the comfortable seating area.
  4. Furnishing some rooms in a house at Vaucluse. Sourcing furniture that matches a home’s aesthetic is one of my great pleasures. I am really enjoying the simplicity of choosing new pieces for this beautiful home.
  5. Finally, I have just finished designing the interior of a three-bedroom apartment in the Toaster Building, a coveted block in Sydney’s CBD. With lots of sharp angles and glass, this space was a challenge to work with, but I am very pleased with the end result: it’s inviting yet chic, and the harbour views are absolutely stunning. I was honoured to be the interior design firm chosen to tackle this space. If you like, you can see photos of the apartment here.

Stephanie Nadel

Assosciate Interior Architect

What makes Stephanie Nadel’s success story so remarkable is that she has come so far, so fast.
Stephanie, the Associate Interior Architect at Marylou Sobel Interior Design, has gained more experience, and handled more responsibilities in the past ten years than many other design professionals take on in their careers.

Stephanie, a multi-talented full service professional, carried out a wide variety of commercial and residential design tasks while she was based in London. She worked for three prominent interior design firms, as well as on her own, and served clients around the world.

In the process, she helped complete within 12 weeks the design and installation of a penthouse suite on The World, the luxury residential yacht that circumnavigates the globe. Prior to this Stephanie lead the full refurbishment of a lavish, Grade II listed, five bedroom home in the Hampstead Garden suburbs in London.

During her five years in London, she worked with Gensler, the world’s largest collaborative design, planning and consulting firm; MoreySmith, a leading design and architecture studio, and Fiona Barratt Interiors, an award-winning luxury design firm.

Assisting with projects for those firms, launching her own residential practice, and interacting with vendors worldwide provided her with project management, creative problem solving, sourcing, technical and other skills that benefit her clients today.

Stephanie earned her Bachelor of Interior Architecture degree at the University of New South Wales.

While she is adept in several aspects of design, she’s particularly interested in the challenge of refurbishing existing spaces. “I enjoy the problem solving that’s involved with existing buildings,” she says. “Although it is always a privilege to design alongside a team to create new and innovative structures, I love creating meaningful design from older properties and taking inspiration from heritage details.”
