Why the views aren’t the only reason people are choosing apartment living.
Ease of Access
When I think of apartment living I muse how easy it is to access everything. Living in an apartment means it’s easy to navigate between your living spaces, as they are traditionally smaller than you would find in a house, particularly across different levels. Being able to easily move between your kitchen, to your bedroom may be appealing, particularly if you don’t need a lot of space. When we’re designing an apartment, like any home, we consider how to make the best use of the spaces available, ensuring that movement around the home feels effortless, whilst catering to the needs of those who live there. These interconnected spaces are designed in cohesion with each other, delivering timeless elegance.
Not just ease of access within the home, but apartment living will often give you much better access to amenities as they are found in more urban areas. So you don’t have to go far for whatever you need. But it’s not all easy access.
Something to consider when designing an apartment that differs from designing a house is the access available to the apartment. Whether that be the use of a lift/stairs, allowances for tradespeople working, or simply being able to move furniture or materials into the space, navigating narrow hallways or limited lift access. We carefully take into consideration all of these finer details during our design process, ensuring that everything is completely possible and permittable.
Down-sizing
Ease of access may be a reason why people often choose an apartment when they are downsizing. After managing a home that requires much more upkeep, for example, garden or pool maintenance, lots of bedrooms or spaces, the idea that this is taken care of for you, but you can still enjoy all of the same amenities is certainly appealing. As an interior designer, I am going to forewarn you that downsizing from a home to an apartment will mean that unfortunately a lot of your furniture will not suit your new home. Furnishing a space depends on many factors, from dimensions and size to style or colour scheme, so it’s important to accept that some things will inevitably have to go. Here we are creating a new space for a new phase of life, a home to love and create more special memories in for years to come.
Apartment Interior Design – considering the details
When designing a house or an apartment the process is very much the same, but there are a few details that are more unique to apartment interior design. If the apartment is above ground level, then considering the acoustics is very important, to minimise the noise for your neighbours below. Timber floors may need an extra acoustic layer beneath them when laid. Light can also be a challenge in an apartment, as they are not always privy to natural light in all areas. There are many different ways that discreet lighting can be introduced in an apartment setting – adding lighting behind bulkheads in the ceiling, above or around shelving, and even wall washes of light. The skill lies with the interior designer and how the space is expertly illuminated to create the perfect setting whatever time of day. Interior architecture is just as important in apartment design as when designing a house, as despite perhaps common misconceptions there is every opportunity to completely remodel spaces to create better outcomes, such as removing walls, adding partitions within a space. Navigating this at an expert level ensures that you get the absolute most from your space, creating a unique city escape tailored just for you.
