In Conversation with Marylou

For this journal, Marylou answers common design questions that invariably come up and are essential to creating spaces our clients love. How to create warmth in open spaces, mix old and new, and build a home that feels effortlessly timeless.

Her answers are thoughtful, considered, and full of the signature Marylou Sobel touch. Refined, soulful, and always grounded in purpose.

How do I make an open-plan space feel warm and inviting?

By using furniture and rugs to gently define each zone, you create invisible walls that bring clarity without losing flow. Each area has its own identity, yet works beautifully with the whole, like a conversation between spaces.”

What’s the best way to mix old and new pieces in a home?

Start with the pieces that hold history or sentiment; they set the tone for everything that follows. New elements should feel as though they’ve always belonged. It’s about thoughtful placement and respectful layering, where everything has its place and purpose.”

How can I add personality to a neutral palette?

”It’s all about layers, texture, tone, and subtle contrasts. Add a sculptural light, a rug with a hint of colour, or a beautifully bound coffee table book. A neutral palette becomes rich and expressive when you play with materials, form, and the unexpected.”

What should I invest in when designing a home?

”A designer who truly listens. Who pays attention. From there, it’s about investing in the not-so-obvious, the elements you can’t always see, but absolutely feel. Underfloor heating, natural stone, reverse cycle air conditioning, dimmable architectural lighting, authentic finishes. These foundational choices create a home that feels grounded, luxurious, and impossible to retrofit later.”

How do you design a home that feels timeless?

”Design with heart. When every decision is intentional and authentic,

the result will always stand the test of time.”

We hope Marylou’s insights spark inspiration for your own space.
