How I knew I was destined for design

I’d like to kick off my new blog by telling you a little bit about how I came to be a designer.

I wasn’t one of those people who ‘fell’ into interior design. I knew from a very young age that this was not only going to be my profession, but also my passion and creative outlet.

When I was just eight years old, I got all dolled up to go to an (very grown up) ‘afternoon tea’ with my mother and one of her friends. After we arrived, the piles of sweets and treats didn’t catch my attention – rather, the house did. The whole house was like a feast for my eyes: it was well appointed, beautiful, and lavish with detail. Between the wallpaper, matching curtains, tranquil colours, and lots of layering and texture, my gaze was pulled in all directions. I remember sitting down on the thick carpet next to the beautiful antique coffee table where coffee and cake was served, and just admiring the house the whole time.

From that day on, I knew I wanted to create beautiful, memorable spaces like that one. I wanted to be an interior designer. I’ve always had a creative streak and a keen, sharp eye. I also take in my surroundings very quickly while scrutinising them at the same time, which is an ability that has served me well throughout my career.

So there you have it – the story of the exact moment when I knew I was going to ‘grow up’ to become an interior designer.

Have you ever had a ‘lightbulb’ experience like this one?
