You might only see the finished photographs of our projects — the calm rooms, layered textures and careful details – but behind every image is a structured, highly considered interior design process refined over decades. As a Sydney interior design studio, Marylou Sobel Interior Design brings together experience, systems and creativity to deliver timeless, luxury interiors that feel genuinely like home.
Every project begins with understanding how you live, not just how your home looks. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, we treat each residence – whether it’s a heritage home, contemporary apartment or coastal retreat – as a fresh canvas. From there, we layer colour, texture, light and detail so the space reflects your personality, lifestyle and the architecture of your Sydney home.
1. The initial interior design consultation
Our work together starts with a personal, one-on-one interior design consultation, either in your home or at our Woollahra studio in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. This is where we walk through your spaces or review your plans, talk through the scope of work, budget and timelines, and discuss how you and your family like to live.
Marylou listens carefully to your stories, preferences and design inspirations – from favourite colours and materials to treasured artwork and furniture pieces. This conversation becomes a clear interior design brief, guiding every decision so the project stays aligned with your needs from concept to completion.
2. Back in the studio – concept development
After the consultation, we return to our Woollahra interior design studio to begin translating your brief into a concept. Surrounded by images, fabrics and material samples, our design team researches, sketches and tests ideas that respond to your home’s architecture and your lifestyle.
At this stage, we explore potential colour palettes, flooring, joinery finishes, furniture styles and lighting concepts. It’s a thoughtful, creative phase where we draw on decades of interior design experience in Sydney to find the right balance between beauty, practicality and longevity.
3. Shaping the vision – design development
Next, we move into detailed design development, refining the interior design so you can clearly see how your home will look and feel. We consider space planning, custom joinery, furniture layouts, window treatments, rugs, lighting and soft furnishings, making sure every element works together as a cohesive whole.
Using hand sketches, moodboards, digital collages and 3D visualisations, we present a complete interior design scheme for your review. This is where you see the vision come to life – an opportunity to respond, ask questions and make gentle adjustments before anything is ordered or installed.
4. Bringing the design to life – project implementation
Once the design is approved, we move into implementation – the phase where your Sydney interior design project begins to take shape on site. Our studio coordinates trusted trades and suppliers, places orders for furniture, fittings and fixtures, and works closely with architects and builders to ensure the design is executed as intended.
Managing the detail is crucial. We review samples, confirm finishes and attend site meetings to keep the project running smoothly. Our aim is to make the renovation or build process feel clear and reassuring for you, while protecting the integrity of the design from start to finish.
5. Installation and finishing touches
When building works are complete, we move into installation and styling – the final layer that brings your interiors to life. We coordinate deliveries and install furniture, rugs, window treatments, lighting, artwork and decorative objects, paying attention to how each piece contributes to the atmosphere of your home.
Marylou’s signature approach blends modern and vintage pieces, custom designs and existing favourites you already own. This mix creates luxury interiors that feel layered and personal rather than “showroom perfect,” with every room connected by a consistent design story.
A structured process, a personal outcome
Behind the calm, elegant spaces we’re known for is a robust, documented interior design process that has evolved with the studio over many years. Yet even with strong systems in place, our approach remains deeply personal: listening carefully, collaborating closely and designing in a way that feels authentic to you.
Whether you’re planning a renovation, new build or a complete home refresh, our Sydney interior design studio is focused on one outcome – creating timeless, cohesive spaces with an element of surprise, where every room tells a story and genuinely feels like home.
