my trades upholsterer

To further explore the process of working with Marylou Sobel Interior Design, I wanted to share with you some information surrounding my trades and the people I have established great working relationships with over the years.

Like many valued, mutually beneficial and professional relationships, mine are built on trust, respect and loyalty. The artisans, craftsman and tradesman that I work with are truly talented and I value and respect their craft and knowledge. The development of these working relationships build over time and in general, over many projects working together, so, for this week’s blog post, I wanted to share a little with you about what it’s like to work with my professional upholsterer.

When working on my client’s projects, it is always beneficial to be able to take a space to the next level with adding a special, bespoke furniture piece. I absolutely love working with beautiful, luxurious textiles and custom upholstery is a wonderful way of another sophisticated layer to the room. Working with a trusted upholsterer means that the furniture piece can be tailored to a client’s needs and specific requirements. I can specify the fabric, and finishes, including those all-important details like piping, studs or self-edged.

When working with my upholsterer, I am able to specify the comfort level, including the shape of the frame of a sofa, or dining chair. We also go over the cushion inserts, as we have a choice of feather and foam or dacron, or a foam core with a feather wrap- there are many options to choose from in order to get it just right for my client.

When planning the piece or pieces, we also look at whether or not my client prefers a shabby chic look or a more tailored, contemporary look. I am able to specify almost any design of chair, ottoman, bedhead or sofa, depending on the style of the home.

Once the piece or pieces are underway with fabric and detail selections made, I am able to make as many visits to the workroom, with or without the client to observe the process and make any changes that I may need to throughout the length of the project. All of this comes with a lot of experience and something that is not established overnight.

Another great advantage of establishing a long-term relationship with a trusted upholsterer is the ability to breathe life into special, treasured pieces for my clients. There is nothing like breathing new life into a tired piece of furniture- by replacing the cushions, reupholstering the seats and replacing the fabric, a vintage piece or a family heirloom can be brought back to life again. You don’t always have to buy a new piece of furniture, as long as the frame is strong and in good working condition, it is definitely worth recovering a favourite piece of furniture.
