New Year, New Home – Interior Design 2023

The new year is quite often a new start for people; new year’s resolutions are in full swing and everybody is seemingly ready for change. I’ve always said that by changing the way people feel about their environment, ultimately it can change the way they feel about themselves. So if you’re feeling inspired to change as we enter 2023, maybe looking a little closer to home may help you along the way.

And for those of you who are feeling just wonderful the way you are, you may be considering changing your home for completely different reasons. Maybe you’ve recently returned from holiday and feel like your house is looking a little tired and rough around the edges. You may have noticed that your kitchen just doesn’t seem to be very functional anymore, or that you have poor storage solutions that are becoming irritating. Now life has returned to normal after the pandemic and entertainment has returned to the agenda, you may be struggling with the right space or a large enough dining table. There is no time like now to make a change.

The Domino Effect

If, for whatever reason, you are ready to breathe new life into your home, it often starts with just one thing or one area. Maybe you’re ready for a new kitchen. But if you’re installing a new kitchen, you need to consider the flooring that transcends from one room to the next. With a newly painted kitchen, it may then lead to having to repaint areas close to here, elements such as door frames, skirting are all the finer details people often forget.

Before you know it, you’re completely re-doing your entire home. This is why it is so important to consult an interior designer before you begin your redesign project, so you can be assured of a cohesive design outcome at the end of your project.

Planning achieves perfection, not just in the design but the delivery. You need to understand the impact of changing one space, and working with an interior designer means that the process is carefully planned, budgeted and executed, without the domino effect taking control. You want this to last for many years to come, so it’s important to get it right first time (and on time).

How to freshen up your home

If you’re not quite ready to completely rehaul your home just yet, there are of course different ways that you can bring it back to life and create something you can fall in love with all over again. The quickest and easiest way to breathe fresh life into your home is to repaint. Simple yet so effective, you’ll thank me for this piece of advice.

Re-style your home

This is great for those craving a change, but not ready to commit to anything big. Simply adding a vase with beautiful flowers can change the way a space feels. Replace your old books with something new or add an extra accessory here and there. Add a new cushion or introduce a new lamp. These small details all contribute to the overall look and feel of the space, and although they may be micro changes, can make a macro impact.

Fresh fabrics

If you have furniture that has good bones (I’m not recommending this for everything), you can consider reupholstering furniture. A bedhead is an excellent example of a way that you can create something completely different, yet the same, within a space. Choosing a new fabric for your dining chairs or sofa can create the feeling that you have new furniture altogether, whilst maintaining that beautiful familiarity these pieces have.

Movement

Sometimes people have success moving furniture around to create a new look in the home. Many teenagers are fans of doing this to their bedrooms for example. Or if you are limited in terms of how you can move your furniture, why not consider trying a piece of furniture in a different room. When I design homes for my clients I am always considering the overall design, so pieces should work effortlessly in whatever space in the home, as they’re all singing from the same music sheet so to speak.

I hope I’ve given you some ideas today on how you can bring your home back to life, or certainly make it a place that you are in love with. If you’re ready to redesign your home and aren’t sure where to start, please get in touch.

Stephanie Nadel

Assosciate Interior Architect

What makes Stephanie Nadel’s success story so remarkable is that she has come so far, so fast.
Stephanie, the Associate Interior Architect at Marylou Sobel Interior Design, has gained more experience, and handled more responsibilities in the past ten years than many other design professionals take on in their careers.

Stephanie, a multi-talented full service professional, carried out a wide variety of commercial and residential design tasks while she was based in London. She worked for three prominent interior design firms, as well as on her own, and served clients around the world.

In the process, she helped complete within 12 weeks the design and installation of a penthouse suite on The World, the luxury residential yacht that circumnavigates the globe. Prior to this Stephanie lead the full refurbishment of a lavish, Grade II listed, five bedroom home in the Hampstead Garden suburbs in London.

During her five years in London, she worked with Gensler, the world’s largest collaborative design, planning and consulting firm; MoreySmith, a leading design and architecture studio, and Fiona Barratt Interiors, an award-winning luxury design firm.

Assisting with projects for those firms, launching her own residential practice, and interacting with vendors worldwide provided her with project management, creative problem solving, sourcing, technical and other skills that benefit her clients today.

Stephanie earned her Bachelor of Interior Architecture degree at the University of New South Wales.

While she is adept in several aspects of design, she’s particularly interested in the challenge of refurbishing existing spaces. “I enjoy the problem solving that’s involved with existing buildings,” she says. “Although it is always a privilege to design alongside a team to create new and innovative structures, I love creating meaningful design from older properties and taking inspiration from heritage details.”
