Styling your Buffet – The Marylou Way

by | Aug 16, 2024 | Inspiration, Interior Design | 0 comments

At the age of eight, Marylou found herself yearning to curate and create with a desire to transform spaces around her. Possessing an acute awareness of her surroundings and drawn to the beauty and elegance of well-designed spaces, she found her passion in interior design…and the rest is history!

We spoke to Marylou in her beautiful home recently and she took us through how she styles her buffet, sideboards and baker’s stands.

These pieces of furniture offer a fantastic way to add extra storage to your home while providing the perfect spot to showcase your treasures and decorative items. They also create an ideal setting for adding lighting and ambience with a beautiful lamp or for displaying a large mirror or artwork. Whatever you choose to feature on your buffet should reflect your personality—it’s an opportunity to express who you are, and the items you display can serve as a great conversation starter!

“I love styling people’s homes, and I encourage them, while we are designing the project and procuring furniture, to start looking for art and object along the way so that by the end of the project their house has a really lovely feel to it.” – Marylou Sobel

Marylou’s buffet is a treasure trove of meaningful collections, many gathered from her travels around the world. Each piece has been thoughtfully styled to reflect the deep significance they hold for her, her husband, and their family. Among the items are ceramic statues from Turkey and a hand-sculpted horse made by an Iranian artist living in France.

“I love horses and come from a family of horse riders, so this is really special and meaningful to me.”

Marylou shares.

Also on display is a beautiful tiara and purse, adorned with delicate embroidered lace in perspex boxes. Instead of keeping these beautiful heirlooms tucked away, Marylou chooses to showcase them for everyone to enjoy and spark conversation.

Incorporating meaningful elements into your sideboard styling can elevate your space, turning it into a visually appealing focal point. By experimenting with height, layers, and textures, and thoughtfully blending elements from the surrounding rooms, you’ll create a display that’s both captivating and sophisticated.

Remember, your sideboard is more than just a functional piece of furniture—it’s an opportunity to showcase your personality and style. With a little creativity and attention to detail, you can transform it into a stunning centrepiece that truly enhances your home!

Stephanie Nadel

Assosciate Interior Architect

What makes Stephanie Nadel’s success story so remarkable is that she has come so far, so fast.
Stephanie, the Associate Interior Architect at Marylou Sobel Interior Design, has gained more experience, and handled more responsibilities in the past ten years than many other design professionals take on in their careers.

Stephanie, a multi-talented full service professional, carried out a wide variety of commercial and residential design tasks while she was based in London. She worked for three prominent interior design firms, as well as on her own, and served clients around the world.

In the process, she helped complete within 12 weeks the design and installation of a penthouse suite on The World, the luxury residential yacht that circumnavigates the globe. Prior to this Stephanie lead the full refurbishment of a lavish, Grade II listed, five bedroom home in the Hampstead Garden suburbs in London.

During her five years in London, she worked with Gensler, the world’s largest collaborative design, planning and consulting firm; MoreySmith, a leading design and architecture studio, and Fiona Barratt Interiors, an award-winning luxury design firm.

Assisting with projects for those firms, launching her own residential practice, and interacting with vendors worldwide provided her with project management, creative problem solving, sourcing, technical and other skills that benefit her clients today.

Stephanie earned her Bachelor of Interior Architecture degree at the University of New South Wales.

While she is adept in several aspects of design, she’s particularly interested in the challenge of refurbishing existing spaces. “I enjoy the problem solving that’s involved with existing buildings,” she says. “Although it is always a privilege to design alongside a team to create new and innovative structures, I love creating meaningful design from older properties and taking inspiration from heritage details.”
