Much like children, we don’t have a favourite! But here at Marylou Sobel, we share a deep affection for designing and redefining a heritage home. The architectural integrity and historical charm ignite a provocative and whimsical spark within us.
Heritage homes provide the perfect backdrop to work with. Ceiling roses, decorative cornices, and fireplaces all tell a story about the house and its history. These elements require a carefully-considered nuance to honour the style of the home. It is about connecting the old with the new, honouring the legacy that lived within these walls before us, and continuing the story for future generations…
Ferris Street, Annandale.
This stunning three-bedroom Federation house in the leafy suburb of Annandale has been in the client’s family for four generations and had not seen renovations for many years. Our goal was to create a cohesive, warm, inviting, and comfortable home that embraces a modern edge while honouring the original architecture. We chose neutral colours as the base palette, accented with vibrant citrus, orange, pink, green, and blue tones. New flooring was introduced, including black and white tiles for the bathroom and laundry, arranged in different patterns to reflect the unique charm of a Federation house.
One of the most enchanting aspects of heritage homes is the narrative they carry. Each feature, from the grand staircases to the intricate mouldings, speaks of a different era, a different time. Our role as designers is to preserve these stories while infusing modern touches that enhance functionality and comfort without compromising the home’s soul.
