The DIA & the 2015 Australian Interior Design Awards

If you are interested in design you will probably have heard of the Design Institute of Australia (the DIA) – the professional body representing Australia’s design industry.  I have been a member of the DIA for almost 30 years! (Where have the years gone?) As Australia is ever advancing in worldwide repute for both its designs and designers, the DIA performs a role of increasing importance, promoting the industry both nationally and internationally.

For a designer in Australia, the DIA uniquely offers the ability to connect, and develop relationships, with other designers and design industry professionals, and to remain at the forefront of Australian and international design knowledge and trends.  The DIA supports and nurtures its designers, new and established, across all disciplines of design, encouraging standards of excellence.  One way that the DIA encourages excellence in the design industry is through its collaborative organisation of the annual Australian Interior Design Awards, being held this year on the 15th of May.

The Australian Interior Design Awards represent the pinnacle of interior design achievement in Australia for that year.  Awards are bestowed across numerous categories including workplace design, retail design, public and hospitality design, installation residential design, sustainability, innovation and residential decoration.

The shortlist for the residential decoration award was released just over a month ago and there are some amazing projects vying for the honour.

Take for example Hare & Klein’s Cliff Top House  – an exquisite entry!

Also wonderful is The Strand by Whiting Architects.

And then there is Matt Gibson Architecture and Design’s Abstract House, which prominently features Tom Dixon’s Beat pendant lights over the dining table (see my recent post on these gorgeous light fittings here). Another stunning nomination.

So, which is my pick to win?  It’s a difficult call, as this year the award has been flooded with amazing nominations.  Having said that, I greatly admire the work of Hare & Klein and, historically, they have won – or been shortlisted for – this award more than any other design firm, so it would be hard to go past one of their three nominated projects, especially the exquisite Cliff Top House, shown above.    Time will tell!

Stephanie Nadel

Assosciate Interior Architect

What makes Stephanie Nadel’s success story so remarkable is that she has come so far, so fast.
Stephanie, the Associate Interior Architect at Marylou Sobel Interior Design, has gained more experience, and handled more responsibilities in the past ten years than many other design professionals take on in their careers.

Stephanie, a multi-talented full service professional, carried out a wide variety of commercial and residential design tasks while she was based in London. She worked for three prominent interior design firms, as well as on her own, and served clients around the world.

In the process, she helped complete within 12 weeks the design and installation of a penthouse suite on The World, the luxury residential yacht that circumnavigates the globe. Prior to this Stephanie lead the full refurbishment of a lavish, Grade II listed, five bedroom home in the Hampstead Garden suburbs in London.

During her five years in London, she worked with Gensler, the world’s largest collaborative design, planning and consulting firm; MoreySmith, a leading design and architecture studio, and Fiona Barratt Interiors, an award-winning luxury design firm.

Assisting with projects for those firms, launching her own residential practice, and interacting with vendors worldwide provided her with project management, creative problem solving, sourcing, technical and other skills that benefit her clients today.

Stephanie earned her Bachelor of Interior Architecture degree at the University of New South Wales.

While she is adept in several aspects of design, she’s particularly interested in the challenge of refurbishing existing spaces. “I enjoy the problem solving that’s involved with existing buildings,” she says. “Although it is always a privilege to design alongside a team to create new and innovative structures, I love creating meaningful design from older properties and taking inspiration from heritage details.”
