05 Jul Where I turn for Design Inspiration
Many designers, myself included, are often asked where we draw inspiration from. The truth is, inspiration can come often when we aren’t even looking for it. I find inspiration everywhere, sometimes it even comes to me in the middle of the night when I am meant to be sleeping.
However, there are certain places and people that drive my personal love for what I do, give me ideas and help me form creative, inspired interiors. Today it is my delight to share some of these sources of inspiration with you.
Originally from South Africa and now living in Australia, I have enjoyed transitioning between and living in different parts of the world. I have also travelled to many other countries, and love to do so to learn about other cultures. In particular, I love to see different architecture and how buildings in other parts of the world compliment their environment. Additionally, when I travel I find inspiration from a culture’s art, design fairs, even trying new cuisines and just enjoying great food and being exposed to new places, things or thoughts.
Books and magazines
Other publications from overseas that I enjoy are The World of Interiors, Florida, Architectural Digest, British House & Garden, Elle Décor, British Homes & Garden …and many more. I love design books too.
I am not influenced by any one designer or person, rather I am influenced by good design, when implemented well. I get inspired walking into any well-appointed interior, whether it be a home, restaurant, hotel, etc.
Having said that, if you asked me who my favourite designers are, there are 3 who come to mind. They are Axel Vervoordt, Christian Liaigre, and Piet Boon; all incredibly talented designers in their fields.
All kinds of places in nature inspire me. From walking in forests to beaches and the ocean, even a garden or park. It is sometimes the clarity and energy I get from a walk in nature that brings a wave of inspiration.
I love to design outdoor living spaces for this reason as well – I believe they are a place of calm and clarity that really adds to a home. I have a beautiful garden in Boronia House so that I can surround myself with nature and use it to help me with daily inspiration.
I love textiles and so I get a lot of inspiration from all fabrics. It’s their colour, texture and visual appeal that draws me in. The way they fall or sit on a piece of furniture, their handle. It’s something I truly love and can’t help but be inspired by.
Although I don’t follow many blogs, I do enjoy Melissa Penfold’s blog. She is an Australian authority on style and design whose taste speaks to me.
I also like Design Addicts Platform by Richard Misso, showing off new and exciting projects from around Australia and the globe.
