MSID Team
With the year coming to an end and the holiday season almost upon us, this week I thought I would share a light-hearted blog from the heart of our team. We were asked six questions, designed to give you a unique insight and perspective into the passion and inspiration behind the Marylou Sobel Interior Design team. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed answering these questions for you.

In order of appearance:

Marylou Sobel – Principal Interior Designer

Stephanie Nadel – Associate Interior Architect

Blanka Jukanto – Interior Architect

Hannah Rommelse – Interior Designer

Marylou Sobel - Director/Principal Designer

Who’s your favourite designer?

Marylou: I have many favourite designers, Christopher Boots for lighting, he uses crystals in his designs, like jewels. The late, Christian Liaigre was an interior architect and furniture designer; his furniture and interiors were uncluttered, had clean lines and perfect proportions. Bernie De Le Cuona for fabric, to name a few.

Stephanie: Rose Uniacke. Her designs are always perfectly balanced with old and new, classical and timeless, and most importantly, comfortable.

Blanka: No particular die-hard favourites but I think Antoni Gaudi’s work is incredible, unique and so iconic.

Hannah: Axel Vervoordt for his wabi-sabi-inspired interiors that resonate with my aesthetic and Japanese background/culture. Eye Swoon; she is not formally trained as an interior designer however creates the most beautiful interiors. She is also a cook and considers herself a multi-hyphenate which I love.

Three things you love about working in interior design?

Marylou: I find interior design so stimulating. I love the challenge of finding solutions for clients, by improving their surroundings, ultimately improving how they feel. Seeing their reaction when they move into their new space. Love working with colour, texture, tiles, materials, etc. It makes me feel alive.

Stephanie:

  1. Teamwork.
  2. Being creative.
  3. The satisfaction of a completed project and a happy client.
Stephanie Nadel - Associate Interior Architect
Blanka:

  1. Watching your ideas, turn into sketches, drawings, renders and then eventually come to life! I’ve always loved hand-sketching since I was little and now having it as part of my work processes is very enjoyable.
  2. All the beautiful inspiring things I get to look at/have access to on a daily basis, like wallpapers, fabrics, furniture, stone etc.
  3. Every project is so different so there’s never any feeling of being in a repetitive cycle.

Hannah:

  1. No day is the same and no project is the same!
  2. I love how a space can transform and evoke an emotion. Whether it’s a home or a restaurant/bar or hotel…. The creativity capabilities are endless.
  3. Creating beautiful spaces that are harmonious to how one inhabits.
Blanka Jukanto - Interior Architect

What’s your favourite colour combination? In the home, accessories, clothing etc…

Marylou: White/cream/stone colour, tan/taupe, and black/charcoal. I love dark green, khaki green, pops of sun-bleached burnt orange and purple.

Stephanie: Denim and white. Cream and green.

Blanka: I definitely love a combination of different shades of neutrals and browns in any scenario. I also love hints of golden tones or antiqued brass thrown in the mixture.

Hannah: Neutrals! My interior and wardrobe co-exist. I will add a pop of colour with artwork or a cushion at home or when it comes to my wardrobe, I’ll introduce some colour for an event/occasion. Otherwise, day to day, I am wearing black or neutral colours. I prefer my clothing slightly oversized and nothing too tight or structured.

What’s your favourite space in your home? Or any home?

Marylou: I love our bedroom, it’s very calming, inviting, and luxurious. I love our patio, as it’s covered and represents another very usable inviting space,  living room/dining room. I love how the kitchen brings everyone together.

Stephanie: My bedroom.

Blanka: My favourite space in any home is probably the vanity area. I find it to be such a comforting, feminine space where I can really just focus on myself, and do things for myself.

Hannah: The kitchen… it’s my favourite space to start the morning by making a coffee, cooking a beautiful meal or ending the day with a cup of tea before bed. Pure bliss.

Hannah Rommelse - Interior Designer

  3. A double shower in the in an outdoor indoor bathroom,

  5. A fireplace in my bathroom and all living rooms (can all be gas).

Stephanie:

  1. Steel doors.

  3. A bath in front of a window.
  4. A huge laundry.
  5. A timeless sofa.

Blanka:

What does your style say about you and what you love?

Marylou: I pay a lot of attention to detail, and am very considered.

Stephanie: I love symmetry, and colours that are easy on the eye, but I equally love having pops of wow and quirkiness. Just in small doses. I’m a Libra so I think I like balance and harmony. My style reflects this.

Blanka: I generally am not into trends. I have a tendency to stick to the classics, to the things I know will work and have stood through the test of time.

Hannah: I am a minimalist at heart. I don’t like clutter and prefer to own quality over quantity.

Stephanie Nadel

Assosciate Interior Architect

What makes Stephanie Nadel’s success story so remarkable is that she has come so far, so fast.
Stephanie, the Associate Interior Architect at Marylou Sobel Interior Design, has gained more experience, and handled more responsibilities in the past ten years than many other design professionals take on in their careers.

Stephanie, a multi-talented full service professional, carried out a wide variety of commercial and residential design tasks while she was based in London. She worked for three prominent interior design firms, as well as on her own, and served clients around the world.

In the process, she helped complete within 12 weeks the design and installation of a penthouse suite on The World, the luxury residential yacht that circumnavigates the globe. Prior to this Stephanie lead the full refurbishment of a lavish, Grade II listed, five bedroom home in the Hampstead Garden suburbs in London.

During her five years in London, she worked with Gensler, the world’s largest collaborative design, planning and consulting firm; MoreySmith, a leading design and architecture studio, and Fiona Barratt Interiors, an award-winning luxury design firm.

Assisting with projects for those firms, launching her own residential practice, and interacting with vendors worldwide provided her with project management, creative problem solving, sourcing, technical and other skills that benefit her clients today.

Stephanie earned her Bachelor of Interior Architecture degree at the University of New South Wales.

While she is adept in several aspects of design, she’s particularly interested in the challenge of refurbishing existing spaces. “I enjoy the problem solving that’s involved with existing buildings,” she says. “Although it is always a privilege to design alongside a team to create new and innovative structures, I love creating meaningful design from older properties and taking inspiration from heritage details.”
